The University of Virginia School of Law seeks an experienced and highly motivated professional to serve as a Clinical Programs Paralegal.
This is a new position at the Law School.
The University of Virginia School of Law is consistently recognized as one of the top law schools in the country.
The environment is both active and supportive, with a strong sense of collegiality among students, faculty, and staff.
The Law School’s clinical programs currently include 24 clinics in a wide range of practice areas, and offer students exposure to a range of litigation, policy and transactional work.
The clinics provide free legal services to clients in the local community, nationally and internationally.
Over half of the Law School’s students enroll in an academic clinic during their studies.
While the clinical programs include both in-house clinics (taught by resident faculty) and external clinics (taught by adjunct faculty), this position will serve in-house clinics.
The Clinical Programs Paralegal will perform a range of administrative and legal tasks in support of the in-house clinics that focus on criminal justice reform, litigation and/or appellate advocacy.
In addition, the Clinical Programs Paralegal will provide faculty support to approximately five faculty.
The work involves case management, maintaining and organizing case files, assisting with investigation and court filings, cite checking and formatting documents and exhibits, as well as more traditional faculty support work such as tracking student hours, assisting with reimbursements, and assisting with some events.
A main focus of the Clinical Programs Paralegal’s time will be spent supporting the Innocence Project Clinic (“UVAIP”), which identifies, investigates, and litigates wrongful conviction cases in Virginia, and also advocates for policy reform.
The Clinical Programs Paralegal will play a vital role in intake and screening, as well as obtaining and organizing core case documents and overseeing key aspects of data collection and case management.
Because this position will provide significant exposure to post-conviction litigation and wrongful conviction work in Virginia, it is ideal for someone with an interest in these topics.
Specific Duties of this position include: Support Law School clinics with a full range of legal assistant duties and administrative duties.
Prepare litigation notebooks and exhibits.
Conduct investigative and archival research via internal records, trial and appellate court dockets, and on-line databases, including Westlaw and Lexis.
Track and coordinate receipt of public record requests.
Maintain and organize cases and files.
Coordinate data collection from case files and outside partners/stakeholders.
Process reimbursements and assist with travel arrangements for faculty, students and occasionally clients.
Prepare court documents for filing, including copy editing, cite checking, preparing tables of contents/authorities and assembling exhibits.
Track students’ class hours and serve as administrative liaison with students.
Observe strict confidentiality of all matters within the office.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience: A Bachelor's degree; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
At least three years’ experience supporting a lawyer, law practice, or legal clinic.
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize and effectively manage workload, and regularly meet deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations and marginalized individuals.
Experience working with persons of various social, racial, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
Preferred Education and Experience: A paralegal certificate and/or at least two years’ experience working in a paralegal or legal assistant position, or an equally relevant role strongly preferred.
Demonstrated ability to research and analyze legal information to make informed judgements and recommendations when preparing legal documents.
Familiarity with CLIO or other legal case management software.
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers.
The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, court proceedings, and programs as well as to file or deliver court documents.
This position requires most work to be performed in person at the Law School, with the opportunity to perform a limited amount of work remotely in accordance with Law School policy.
This is a full-time University Managerial and Professional position with benefits.
